Evil genius "Megamind" successfully took control of the box office this weekend and earned megabucks to boot.
The animated film about the crafty villain with the voice of Will Ferrell debuted at No. 1 with $47.7 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates.
"Due Date," the road-trip comedy starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis as mismatched companions, opened a strong No. 2 with $33.5 million.
Tyler Perry's drama "For Colored Girls," based on the play by Ntozake Shange and starring Janet Jackson and Whoopi Goldberg, premiered a solid third-place with $20.1 million.
Last weekend's No. 1 movie, horror tale "Saw 3D," suffered a sharp fall to No. 5 with $8.2 million.
While "Megamind" drew big family crowds Sunday and Saturday, it also was the top draw Friday, bringing in large numbers of adults without children, said Anne Globe, head of marketing for DreamWorks Animation.
"For us to be No. 1 on Friday, it showed we did have a lot of appeal to teens, 'tweens and the date crowd," Globe said.
Ferrell's "Megamind" - in the company of characters voiced by Brad Pitt, Tina Fey and Jonah Hill - hatches a scheme to fill the void in his life that follows the defeat of his superhero nemesis
